About the Senior Dog and Cat Wellness Exam
We recommend comprehensive wellness visits every six months for dogs over the age of 8 and cats over the age of 10. This is especially important since some health issues in older pets can begin with very subtle changes that may go unnoticed until the problem becomes more serious. Routine laboratory blood and urine tests also help us to monitor your senior pet care health status and make early recommendations for treatment if problems are discovered, or if your pet was previously diagnosed with a problem.
If you have any questions or concerns about your senior pet’s health or behavior, please feel free to address them during this visit. One of the most common questions we encounter is what the difference is between normal aging and a medical problem. We can educate you on the signs to watch for that could indicate a problem and warrant a visit for early intervention.
Dog and Cat Arthritis
Just as with humans, senior pets are susceptible to many age-related health conditions that require special treatment or therapy. One of the most common ailments is arthritis. If your pet has arthritis, we can treat it with joint support supplements and anti-inflammatory/pain control medications. We can also use laser therapy, which has benefited many of our patients since we started using this newer treatment modality.
Older pets make wonderful companions, and thanks to advances in veterinary medicine, they’re living longer than ever! You are an important ally in your senior dog and cat’s health care, and the team at Fox Animal Hospital is here to help ensure that your pet is comfortable and happy throughout the “golden years.”
